The Kitchen Island Sink Debate — and Why Design 'Rules' Get It Wrong

Open any design blog and you'll find confident advice about the kitchen island sink: never put the sink in the island. Always put the sink in the island. Never mix metal finishes. Always keep your island clear. The tips are handed down like universal law — but the truth is a little less dramatic, and a lot more useful: it depends.

As a designer, I talk to clients who come to us genuinely confused. They've read one article insisting on a rule, then another insisting on the exact opposite, and now they're second-guessing decisions about their own home before we've even started.

Here's what I'd tell every one of them: there is no one-size-fits-all in design. Not for sink placement, not for layout, not for much of anything. Every home is different. Every family is different. What makes one household thrilled with their kitchen might frustrate another completely.

Take the kitchen island sink debate. For some clients, it's exactly right — they love standing at the island washing dishes while still being part of the conversation happening in the family room. For others, the island is meant to stay clear and open, a landing spot rather than a workstation. Both are good design. Neither is a rule that applies to everyone.

That's really the heart of it: good design isn't a checklist of do's and don'ts. It's a conversation. Our job is to listen — to understand how you actually live, what your mornings look like, how your family gathers — and translate that into a space built specifically for you, not for some average homeowner who doesn't exist.

So the next time you read a blog making a bold, absolute claim about how your home should be laid out — including whether a kitchen island sink belongs in your kitchen — take it with a grain of salt. It might be the right call for someone. It doesn't have to be the right call for you. Good design is a lot of give and take, and the honest answer to almost any design question is: it depends on you.
